Rhantus suturalis
"siphon" on tip of abdomen
Top picture: the tip of a larva's abdomen van een 2nd instar larva (moulted once). The short spines
on the cerci (tail-appendages) in combination with the scarse longer hairs (setae) are
specific for this species. The mirror image in the watersurface shows how the the tip of the abdomen
pulls a dimple in the watersurface. Because of that, the top plate with the two ventilation openings
lies dry above the water and makes contact with the air above.
Top view
The third instar larva (moulted twice) has only the long hairs on the
cerci, as may be
seen on the picture at the left. At right the tip of the abdomen of a 2nd instar larva is put beside
one of a 3d instar larva, at the same scale. On the right picture the course of the airduct is
visible. The last segment of the 2nd instar larva is supposed to be relative wider and shorter than
that of the 3d instar. That is not clearly visible here.
